Thank you, Very Important Patients. We Appreciate Your Help!

We value you first as loyal foot care patients. We also value your help with referrals as we’ve been seeking more patients. You’ve been extremely helpful this past year as you’ve been referring your friends and family who have foot pain or other issues to Hoosier Foot and Ankle.

Dr. Catoire and I serving more patients at the five clinics through thorough diagnosis and a treatment plan for all foot needs. We can offer treatment at all levels from conservative over the counter pain relief to assertive surgery. We appreciate your help more than we can easily express. We do have the Very Important Patient program that offers a special appointment system to those who have referred five people to the clinics.

The following video explains a little more about the appointment times that are available. The clinics that have afternoon hours beginning at 2:00 pm will have appointment slots with no waiting time reserved for our VIP patients. The slots will be open between 1:30 pm and 2:00 pm.

When you want to get your day organized, we have early morning appointments at the clinics which open at 8:30 am, the special appointments are available between 8:00 am and 8:30 am.

Please call us at 317-660-2115 to begin your status as a Very Important Patient. Our staff makes every effort to ask new patients how they happened to learn about Hoosier Foot and Ankle. If you have referred someone, we want to be sure you receive credit for the referral. Ask your family and friends to be sure we do our job by reminding us that you’re the connection for us.

Support for Your Doctors From Podiatric Associations = Support for You

Indiana Podiatric Medical Association

A membership and active participation in the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Indiana Podiatric Medical Association offers multi level support for your doctors.

Through these associations, particularly the Indiana Podiatric Medical Association, we have access to the expertise of other doctors. We also have the encouragement of a group that promotes education for members in new technologies and treatments. We are trained and encourage to educate patients on proper foot care and how that is related to the patient’s overall health.

The Indiana association was organized in 1928 according to the IPMA website with the intention of improving professional standards, arts and sciences of podiatric medicine, and encouraging continued, lifelong education and learning for podiatric professionals.

I am proud to be president of the board of trustees for the Indiana Podiatric Medicine Association. I believe that networking and offering connection between Doctors of Podiatric Medicine brings benefits to the doctors and their patients.

A patient who endures other health issues such as diabetes, will need podiatric expertise to be able to live a full life with as much use of his or her feet as possible. At Hoosier Foot and Ankle, the doctors are all dedicated to providing foot health care which can prevent unnecessary amputation at the furthest chance.

For further diabetic care, through our podiatric networking, we’ve observed that diabetic patients who have foot pain may be suffering from equinus. To add an uncomfortable, sleep disturbing brace to the burdens already borne by the diabetic is not our best practice. This year, because of a personal foot injury which resulted in equinus in my own foot, I developed an adjustable brace that can provide intelligent treatment to equinus. I am proud to make this brace available for sale to other doctors who see the same conditions.

We’re ready to treat emergency sports injuries with the skills we have because of our strong association. We’re dedicated to treating pediatric foot conditions such as club foot with our experience and skill.

As members of the state and national association, we and our patients gain because we are now in a position to learn more. As the example of the brace illustrates, we also are in a position to share information and technology with others for the benefit of their patients.

The organizations that bring podiatrists together are more than a medical political statement, they are useful and practical for both doctors and patients. As president of the board of trustees for the Indiana Podiatric Medicine Association, I want to encourage Indiana podiatrists to join us in our mission to serve the foot care needs of Indiana. Make the decision and contact the association today. If you have questions or reservations, please contact us.

The 2011 Non-Invaders at Hoosier Foot and Ankle | EPAT® and Cool Breeze™ Laser Treatment

The Non-Invaders at Hoosier Foot and Ankle — Just arrived in 2011. EPAT® for foot pain and Cool Breeze Laser Treatment for Toenail Fungus

EPAT® — Pulse Activation/Shock Wave Therapy came to Hoosier Foot and Ankle in 2011. We’re pleased with the results that we can help patients experience with this non-invasive, non-chemical treatment for heel pain.

We’re also happy to be able to offer EPAT® in-office therapy at our five clinics in the Indianapolis area. EPAT® has been found to be effective for Plantar Fasciitis, painful, inflammatory issues with the tissues on the sole (bottom) of the foot. Heel pain is a frequent companion of Plantar Fasciitis — EPAT® works with both. Additionally, EPAT® can bring relief for Achilles tendonitis and help with scar tissue break-up. Scar tissue can cause issues on its own when mobility is limited. Scar tissue limits blood flow, leading to muscle loss.

Laser treatment for toenail fungus is non-invasive and can be achieved in our clinics. The ‘other’ option to relief, CoolBreeze™ gives patients more choices over dangerous drugs (due to potential side effects) which often don’t get rid of the toenail fungus. Laser treatment is an easier choice to make over surgery too. The Cool Breeze™ system is FDA cleared for dermatology. Dr. DeHeer and Dr. Catoire are specially trained to use the equipment. Experience has shown that 2-3 treatments at the proper temperatures can get toenail fungus on the run. Yet, the painless treatments have little to no downtime from activities.

Pretty feet are one of the benefits of getting rid of toenail fungus — you too can be free to wear sandals when the summer of 2012 arrives. Toenail fungus brings a set of uncomfortable problems including pain, itching, unsightliness, infection and the concern about spreading the fungus.

At Hoosier Foot and Ankle, we’ve been so pleased to offer our patients these two non-invasive treatments and look forward to serving patients with them in 2012. We’ll be here throughout the coming year just as we have been in the past. You can call 317-660-2115 for an appointment or use the online appointment request form available 24/7 for your convenience.

Thanksgiving Day is Fast Upon Us – Will You Turkey Trot?

Build a Construction Paper Turkey Celebrate a wonderful family holiday in a healthy manner that lets you enjoy your friends and family, your community and fresh air. Frequently Turkey Trots are community fund raisers and are scheduled for mid-morning on Thanksgiving Day – while the turkey is roasting and before the football game begins, the family can get out doors. A great opportunity to have some fun together celebrating things for which you are thankful while supporting a good cause.

You will want to run safely with a few precautions. Turkey Trot day is not the time to break in a new pair of shoes! Wear some sturdy ‘old-friend’ shoes that fit well and will take you through the Trot successfully. Dress for the weather so that you don’t go home overheated or cold, with the possibility of losing upcoming holiday time to illness.

If you are not in condition for running due to no practice, previous injury or health issue, choose a safe level of participation. A well organized Turkey Trot will have a “Walk” section that you may be able to enjoy without risk to your health.

Wearing costumes for Turkey Trots is an honored tradition for many events and adds to the fun gained from having one more light-hearted day before we head into winter. Some Turkey Trots offer prizes for the best costume. Some events have costumes ready for participants in exchange for donations to the cause of the day.

Going to the Turkey Trot with friends extends the social aspects of the day. After the trot, maybe most will head back to family, but will have good stories to share over the traditional feast. Some friends may run in the Trot together and continue the camaraderie at a special friends’ thanksgiving day together.

The seasonal timing for Turkey Trots can be refreshing because of the cooler weather. The run can be a 5k to 10k run or a longer marathon. Good organizers have sections of the event that are labeled “Walk” which are even more pure social activity for older people, strollers and dog walkers who are out for the fresh air and the good cause. Participants usually pay an entry fee as part of the fund raising program. They can get sponsors for certain accomplishments such as timed events or simply finishing the race. Some Turkey Trot sponsors bring food, water, prizes and special T-Shirts or hats to commemorate the day.

Make Your Turkey Trot GreenThink about adding ‘green’ aspects to your participation on the Turkey Trot. Carry a re-usable water bottle or look for recycle bins along the route for disposable empties (water or juices are often donated for runners). Recycle your costume as a donation to a local thrift store or a listing on eBay or Craigslist. You may be able to snag a neat costume from someone else using these same resources so you have a different one next year. If the Turkey Trot that you choose is making some recycling donation part of the event, bring the used items they suggest such as paper, plastic, shoes or even reusable coats to donate.

The idea of a Thanksgiving event arranged around a ‘fun run’ began in the 1940s. Annual runs became popular during the 1960s. Since then, Turkey Trot events have become more common.

The turkeys in the images above was made by a friend who ‘tested’ the directions at this clever craft page. She found they work very well. You can enjoy the activity yourself (our friend found that grown-up feet and hands make a good-sized turkey) or have some fun with the kids at your house during the holidays. Tracing their FEET in shoes provides shapes that make the turkey body while many helping hands traced on colorful paper go together to create the turkey’s tail and wings. Even the scraps are useful for turkey FEET, wattle and eyes.

Everyone at Hoosier Foot and Ankle is thankful to have worked with our patients in the five clinics around Indianapolis. We’re looking forward to being there for patients old and new throughout the holiday season and for 2012. We appreciate it so very much when patients share their experiences at Hoosier Foot and Ankle with friends and family who need foot care.

Entire Staff at Hoosier Foot and Ankle is Dedicated to Patient Care

The FootDocs at Hoosier Foot and Ankle have a support team who smooth the path for patients.

Dr. Shirley Catoire joined me as associate podiatrist in the practice this summer. We are both experienced and skilled at delivering all aspects of foot care from surgery to therapy.

But, we’re only the FootDocs! Before you get into the treatment room, you will have contact with others on our staff who are committed to your care. So committed that each person takes special training for customer contact certification. Each is prepares so that your first phone call will be handled with the attention you need and deserve as well as every call you need to make to our office.

No one calls the FootDocs when their feet or ankles are comfortable! (Well, maybe you would call to report pain relief) When you call for an appointment you’re in pain from injury or health conditions and you’re seeking relief. That pain is an incredible distraction and commands your attention.

The first person you talk to is aware of your need for relief and prepared to talk you through the appointment process and get you into the clinic of your choice as soon as possible.

That dedication is there for all patients – those of you who have been with us for awhile and for your family and friends whom you encourage to become new patients.

Call 317-660-2115 and let us help you find relief for your foot conditions. Or you may use the online appointment option available 24/7 for your convenience. The wonderful staff does go home at the end of the day, but we know that your foot pain doesn’t keep business hours. Your message will receive prompt response as soon as we are back in the office.

Using Taping to Begin Overcoming Foot Pain

Using Tape for Some Foot TreatmentI wrote an article for PodiatryToday.com regarding taping in some situations when addressing foot pain, injury and other conditions.

For you, as a patient, ‘taping’ is the application of tape to control movement and support your foot. You may have experienced taping when in school sports. I will frequently use tape when evaluating your foot injury to try to get relief for you in a non-surgical manner.

Equinus stretching and anti-inflammatory medication added to tape can give relief early and possibly be the treatment of choice. The same can be applied to tendonitis. With tape I can tell if an orthoses is working for your foot condition…I can tell quickly if the othoses needs more correction.

Taping and applying ‘biomechanics’ lies at the base of unique podiatric medicine. Podiatrists learn the benefits of biomechanics in the patient’s foot and ankles when considering specific conditions or pathologies. That can include the injury situation for athletes and long-term conditions that arise regardless of lifestyle, but which can sure interfere with athletic pursuits and become aggravated with vigorous activity.

In the article, I describe some of the precedures I learned from my mentor, the late Dr. Richard Lundeen, DPM to achieve successful taping. The techniques I learned from Dr. Lundeen were taught to him by Dr. Jack Glick, DPM and apparently originated in California. At Hoosier Foot and Ankle, we are experienced and prepared to diagnose and prescribe surgery when needed. We are also enthusiastic about less aggressive treatment such as taping, orthotics, EPAT® and the new EQ/IQ brace that I developed for the treatment of equinus.

We are available for treatment of injuries from sports, work or other situations, plus foot pain related to health conditions. You don’t have to suffer pain without being able to contact a dedicated foot care (Podiatrist) doctor. Call 317-660-2115 for an appointment or use the online appointment request option available 24/7 for your convenience at our website. We will proceed with a diagnosis that will help you get relief from foot pain.

Be Informed and Empowered in Your Medical Treatment

The “Docs” at Hoosier Foot and Ankle, as podiatric professionals believe that informed patients are happy patients who work with us toward their recovery goals. We all work together to overcome foot pain and discomfort for you.

Toward that belief, we have an increasing resource of information in text and video available on the Hoosier Foot and Ankle website plus special sites for laser toenail fungus treatment, IndianaLaserToenailFungus.com and EPAT® therapy, IndianaShockwave.com. We have an extensive library of videos on YouTube, PADEHEER. We have a Facebook page for you to join and learn more, plus a Twitter page that you are welcome to follow. Our newest effort to keep you informed and in contact with us is an email newsletter.

When you have some understanding of what is going on, you are in a better position to share information with us about other treatment you have received or medications you are taking. You can share family history more comfortably because it has some connection that you now understand.

In the past, the opportunity for patients to become informed about their conditions and treatment was limited to the way the doctor explained things and whatever complicated medical books the patients could find. Worst case for information was gossip from uninformed people with overactive imaginations.

We are so glad we are able to make information available to you for your own research. We want to assure you that we are available and that we want your questions when you call or have an appointment. One of the most valuable things you can bring to the appointment is a list of questions so we can cut the risk of forgetting something you wonder about.

You have a 24/7 opportunity to ask questions at the YouTube Channel (PADeHeer), on the message option at all of the websites, in the comment area of any of the blog posts, on our Facebook page and our Twitter page. You can subscribe to the newsletter on the Hoosier Foot and Ankle website or by texting FOOTDOCS to 42828. The information circle is completed by a notification email that we receive from all of these sources telling us someone has contacted us.

You’re invited to visit our online information.  Call 317-660-2115 for an appointment to get relief for your foot conditions or you may use the online appointment option available 24/7 for your convenience.

Five Clinics For You – Consistent, Capable and Caring

At five locations – each of which is convenient for different patients, my team and I have set up a system that gives you the best foot care that we can. Our goal at each clinic is to be consistent, capable and caring.

We will consistently bring you thorough examination and proper diagnosis. When the treatment plan is determined, we are capable of delivering the necessary treatment. We are skilled at surgery when needed for flat feet, club feet, bunions and more; laser treatment for toenail fungus, and EPAT® (Shockwave) treatment for heel and foot pain. Many of our procedures can be completed right in the office.

We, as an entire team, care about delivering podiatric treatment so that our patients can have healthy feet which work for them as feet were intended to work. The team is headed by two experienced and capable Doctors of Podiatric Medicine – trained and taught to care for your feet.

The five clinic locations are around the Indianapolis area – Carmel, Columbus, Greenwood, Franklin and Shelbyville. We planned the number of clinics for convenience at a time when the economy didn’t demand quite so much efficiency. Now we are more happy than ever that we can offer patients a choice that is both convenient and efficient for them.

Call 317-660-2115 today to arrange for an appointment at the clinic of your choice. Or you may use our Online Appointment Request option available 24/7 in another effort to provide convenience and efficiency for you.
