Remembering Richard O. Lundeen, DPM

The late Richard O. Lundeen was my mentor. His teaching, guidance and example are largely responsible for the mission at Hoosier Foot and Ankle to be passionate about delivering innovative foot care solutions to you, our patients.

I was honored to have Dr. Lundeen as a podiatry patient….finding him to be an ‘impatient’ patient with his own surgery recovery. He was typical of doctors in that aspect.

I wrote a memorial blog post about Dr. Lundeen’s leadership in podiatric medicine – making the field so much better for patients with that leadership. You can read more about his contribution to podiatric medicine as well as to my own practice and life at Podiatrytoday.com.

The post is entitled “In Memory of Richard O. Lundeen, DPM”. Again, I have benefited from knowing and learning from Dr. Lundeen and you have benefited from that mentorship as well. Please take a moment and read about a great man.

Why Select a Podiatrist to Treat Your Foot Needs?

Podiatrists are doctors who choose to specialize in foot care. Their training and education are focused on the treatment of foot issues. Many, such as myself, have surgical training along with other treatment skills to address foot conditions at all levels.

Underlying conditions of health such as diabetes can lead to problems with that diabetic patient’s feet. As a podiatrist, I am trained to work with this type of problem for the future benefit of the patient, perhaps avoiding unnecessary amputation. Or, if amputation is required, I have the skills to perform the necessary surgery and get the best possible end result.

Other conditions can include infection or fungus invasions which we’re prepared to address at Hoosier Foot and Ankle with tools such as laser at our clinics.

Some people are born with conditions such as clubfoot or flat feet that I have expertise in addressing and treating.

Sometimes activities such as sports, vigorous exercise and just plain walking around can end up in an emergency situation for what have been perfect feet. At Hoosier Foot and Ankle, we’re prepared to offer EPAT® (pulse activation/shock wave therapy), orthotics, other therapy or surgery to overcome the unpredictable things that can happen to active people.

Among other information at our website, you can read this article about podiatry and podiatrists.

At Hoosier Foot and Ankle, I care about people and their feet, as does my staff. APMA 2011 Humanitarian Award is Given to Our Own Patrick A. DeHeer, DPM

Dr. DeHeer, a favorite with his patients, was acknowledged at the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) convention this week for the generous heart he has for patients all over the world.

According to releases from the APMA

“The Humanitarian Award is given in recognition of truly outstanding humanitarian efforts that have a profound impact on the public and a definable positive impact on podiatric medicine.”

Acknowledgment of Dr. DeHeer’s work with patients in Haiti both before and after the tragic earthquake in January 2010, his past service as chair of the Podiatric Health Section of the American Public Health Association and his long record of humanitarian medical service all over the world made up the announcement at the convention. WoundCareHaiti.org is non-profit organization that Dr. DeHeer started in Haiti to offer care to earthquake victims and diabetes sufferers

“I am honored to receive this recognition from my peers” commented Dr. DeHeer about the award pointing to his work with podiatric patients in his own clinics and in medical mission clinics to needy, emergency and disaster conditions. As patient testimonials show, this is a doctor who cares.

P.S. This blog post was taken over by Dr. DeHeer’s staff because we are so proud of this honor for him. Please enjoy our enthusiasm with us.

Dr. Deheer Interview with Meet The Masters

Dedicated to the Podiatric Community

I am extremely honored to have been selected as this week’s live interview at Listen to the Masters which is part of PodiatricSuccess.com.

Since 2009, the team at PodiatricSuccess.com has been offering Meet the Masters, an information forum that “features a bold mix of the latest news, opinions and innovative speakers.”

The intention is to feature successful members of today’s Podiatric Medical and Surgical community giving a view of their process for others to learn from and apply. To accomplish that in for podiatrists in the USA and worldwide, PodiatricSuccess.com offers over 50 interviews annually.

Please take a little time from your schedule on Tuesday, 2/8/2011 at 9PM and join us at Meet the Masters for my part of this collection of valuable information.

I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned with others. As part of that commitment to the excellence of podiatry, I write frequently for PodiatryToday.com and serve on the Editorial Board there.

No Such Thing as a ‘Little’ Tendonitis or Achilles Tendonitis | Not a Little ‘Pain in the Heel’

Take overworked or compromised tendons and add the suffix, ‘itis” to talk about inflammation — you know right away you have pain at varying levels.

Tendonitis can be the result of overworking after lack of working (weekend warrior sports) or overworking and injury in professional activities, ailments including arthritis or diabetes or even some congenital issues. If you’ve ever experienced this inflammatory condition, you know there is no such thing as ‘a little tendonitis’. The condition hurts like ‘a lot of tendonitis’.

Some scenarios involving both or either acute tendonitis and chronic tendonitis can be at the base of the misery.

There are treatment options from conservative with therapy and anti-inflammatory pain relievers to some serious surgery. Because acute can escalate to chronic, the best thing to do when you are experiencing tendon inflammation is call your podiatrist. At Hoosier Foot and Ankle, I will give you a thorough examination and recommendation for treatment that will be best for you. With experience and training, I will be able to determine the causes of your inflammation and work to treat them while getting relief for you.

I wrote a blog post at PodiatryToday.com with Dr. Stephen M. Offutt, DPM, MS regarding Tendonitis entitled Conquering Achilles Tendonitis in Athletes which discusses causes and treatment options.

It’s more than a “pain in the heel” or achilles tendon …it is a condition that deserves attention from a professional so you can get back to your active life. Call 1-800-615-1363 for an appointment or use our online appointment option today to get consultation and treatment started.

Everyone is busy with many demands on their time and energy. Reminding yourself to make an appointment at Hoosier Foot and Ankle often occurs while you are:

  • walking the dog,
  • driving home, g
  • getting the family off to school,
  • or countless other tasks that occupy you.

So, you do remind yourself, “I’m going to call them next.” And then get busy at another task, forgetting till early morning or late at night or Saturday. Then, you think you can’t call because, probably, no one is there to answer.

That is just too much stress on top of the particular issues that are causing foot discomfort for you or someone in your family. To make getting an appointment easier, we have an Request An Appointment page at our website. If you are a patient already, you simply can go to the computer at your convenience and enter the information for your preferred date, time and clinic, plus a few other things and click SUBMIT. Just takes a few minutes at a time when you’re in ‘reminder mode’. Someone from our office will call you back to confirm your contact. There is additional information on that page if you need a same day appointment; a simple phone call to us at 800-615-1363 will get a real person who will make the best effort to get you worked in for care.

If you are a new patient, you can request the appointment, plus you can complete the New Patient Information at Hoosier Foot and Ankle in the comfort of your home. No more balancing a clipboard on your knee while in pain and trying to remember important information about your medical conditions or insurance numbers.

On the same webpage with the New Patient Information, you will find our privacy statement. Doing all we can to protect your privacy for medical information and personal information is important at Hoosier Foot and Ankle.

The Internet is a wonderful thing that we’re trying to use for your convenience as well as provide you with information about foot care and the podiatric services we have at Hoosier Foot and Ankle.

Involvement in Your State Association | Revisit New Year’s Resolution | October Conference

The Indiana Podiatric Medical Association annual state conference is scheduled to begin October 14, 2010. I am proud to be on the roster of speakers and presenters. The online registration makes attending even easier for you.

The summer season is winding down. Kids are back in school, the gardens are almost ended, other harvest time projects are lining up so that we have a moment to catch up with intentions and plans that may have been pushed toward the end of the list. Some of us still need to exercise more, eat better, listen better. Or, as I wrote in a post at PodiatryToday.com earlier, get involved with your state association.

Questions about why you don’t attend were posed in the PodiatryToday.com article. Is the cost an issue? Or the location at the Hyatt Regency in Indianapolis? The program? Only you can answer these questions and seek a solution. You are an important part of the podiatry community , particularly in Indiana. If you need help to lower costs, ask someone to brainstorm with you. If you know of a better location, attend and bring that up for next year. Your involvement influences the program — the planners want to give you beneficial programming.

A complaint got me involved and I’ve gained from the experience in many aspects, not the least of which is the chance to make connection with you and others to strengthen my practice. And between us, strengthen the service offered by the podiatric community.

You have time to make a difference for yourself and the association. Follow through on that New Year’s Resolution to become involved and take advantage of the beautiful October season in Indianapolis. Register today. See you there!
